Basic Information

Systematics of Beetles is a summer course (6 ECTS) open to advanced MSc. and Ph.D. students interested in beetle systematics and evolution.

The course will focus on classification and higher systematics of extant beetles (Coleoptera), with lectures and laboratories focused on adults and larvae from all families.

The course is limited to 25 students

Why apply? It is an unique opportunity for students to engage with leading world beetle systematists, appreciate the full spectrum of the world’s beetle diversity, and interact with other students keen on beetle research. A seminar session for students will be held at the end of the course.

Day 1: July 6, Sunday Arrival of students in afternoon, welcome meeting
Day 2: July 7, Monday

Introductory lecture consisting of outline of topics and providing handouts
Brief introduction of students
Adults: morphology and phylogeny, Archostemata, Myxophaga.

Day 3: July 8, Tuesday Adephaga, Hydrophiloidea, Staphylinoidea, Scarabaeioidea
Day 4: July 9, Wednesday Dascilloidea, Buprestoidea, Byrrhoidea, Elateroidea, Derodontoidea, Scirtoidea, Bostrichoidea, Lymexyloidea
Day 5: July 10, Thursday Cleroidea, Cucujoidea, Tenebrionoidea
Day 6: July 11, Friday Chrysomeloidea, Curculionoidea
Day 7: July 12, Saturday Open laboratory
Day 8: July 13, Sunday Free day
Day 9 (July 14, Monday) Larvae: morphology, Archostemata, Myxophaga, Adephaga
Day 10 (July 15, Tuesday) Hydrophiloidea, Staphylinoidea, Scarabaeoidea, Dascilloidea, Buprestoidea
Day 11 (July 16, Wednesday) Byrrhoidea, Elateroidea, Derodontoidea, Scirtoidea, Bostrichoidea, Lymexyloidea

Day 13 (July 18, Friday) Chrysomeloidea, Curculionoidea
Day 14 (July 19, Saturday) Mini-conference: Special Seminars covering research in systematics, evolution, and taxonomy. Presentations of participating students. Official end of course.

Course fee
The course fee is 250 euro and needs to be paid prior to the course - it will cover the accommodation and main meals. Other expenses needed won't be covered.
